Afrikaans Education Specialist | Senior Curriculum Advisor | Moderator | Mentor
Afrikaans is both my home language and my passion. I am deeply committed to teaching the subject with enthusiasm and to helping learners become proficient in a language that supports their development as well-informed South African citizens.
With over 40 years of experience – including 12 years as a Senior Curriculum Advisor for Afrikaans Home Language and First Additional Language – I have developed in-depth knowledge of the CAPS curriculum, the National Curriculum Statement, and relevant educational legislation. I have been actively involved in national and provincial training, moderation, monitoring, examination processes, and the development of lesson plans and study guides.
I believe our talents range from expressive to appreciative, and sometimes we possess one or the other, and at other times we have a combination of both. I am grateful that my artistic talents allow me to create, to learn, to appreciate, and to evaluate.
I completed my art studies at TUKS and thereafter obtained my HOD at Kovsies.
Private art classes for toddlers to adults have always been part of my life.
I was involved in the Visual Arts classroom for 17 years as a teacher and subject head for grades 8–12, and since 2012 I have served as the chief marker for grade 12 Visual Arts and Design in Limpopo. I have also served on the national panel for memorandum discussions for both theory and practical components. Currently, I am employed by the Department of Education as the chief moderator for Visual Arts and Design in Limpopo.
I have been involved in various art festivals as an adjudicator of art and photography, and I have a personal passion for photography. My responsibilities in school yearbooks as the school photographer, as well as short courses in photography, form part of my experience.
I am constantly studying art forms, techniques, artists, and movements, and I find daily inspiration that serves as nourishment for the soul and spirit. My artistry is a gift of grace through which I wish to honour my Creator.
Philippus Hugo obtained his BMus, BMus Hons (Cum Laude) and MMus (Cum Laude) degrees in piano performance from Stellenbosch University under Juliana de Villiers. He made his solo debut with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 16 and has since performed extensively as soloist and accompanist with various orchestras.
Since 1992 he has served as official accompanist at the Hugo Lambrecht Music Centre and from 1994–2010 for the ABSA National Music Competition. He has also been accompanist for SANLAM, ATKV Musique, Artscape, UNISA and several national arts festivals. He performed at the Maputo International Music Festival (2011, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2024) and was a guest artist at the Harare Music Festival in 2024.
In 2013 his opening production for the Klein Karoo Klassiek Festival was nominated for a Fiesta Award for Best Classical Concert. He regularly adjudicates eisteddfods and national competitions, including Hubert van der Spuy (2019) and Johan Vos (2022, 2023). Since 2014 he has served on UNISA’s board of examiners and has been the official accompanist at Stellenbosch University Conservatoire since 2000.
He is currently enrolled for a PhD in Music at the University of the Free State.
